It’s International Love Day. So today, we are going to focus on LOVE. Love is a many splendored thing,
Love lifts us up where we belong, all you need is love.
Love lifts us up where we belong, all you need is love.
BUT.
When you are stuck in a house with the same people for 8 weeks, often being crazy in love is not the first thing you are focusing on.
Today is a great invitation to reset. To focus on filling up each other’s love quotas, and doing it in the way that means the most to that person. Local pastor Gary Chapman has written a masterclass on this concept with the 5 Love Languages. Here are the cliff notes:
Each of us has a ‘love tank’, which needs to be filled up in order for us to feel good about ourselves and our lives. Criticism, aggression, and complaints deplete our love tanks. Loving acts fill it back up.
Here are the 5 primary ways people give and receive love. The way that feels most powerful to you is your “Love Language”. Each person has a love language that means most to them, but they can receive love in all five ways. We all also have a default way that we ‘show love’ to others, but this isn’t always the way we receive love best.
- Physical Touch
- Gifts
- Acts of Service
- Words of Affirmation
- Quality Time
Pay attention to the people in your world right now. Do you know the way they best receive love? Experiment with all 5 ways of expressing love and watch what makes your loved ones bloom. Try and figure out your love language, and make sure your family and loved ones know how to fill your love tank.
One final thing: Love doesn’t hurt. Reports of domestic violence are down right now in Forsyth County, not because DV isn’t happening, but because right now the threat outside the home seems more sinister than the threat within. You can get protection from abuse in a way that limits your eposure to COVID, and it is important to do so. Reach out. We are here for you. You can also report physical or sexual assault or abuse 24/7 at Safe on Seven- a division of Family Services of Forsyth County, NC.
