TGIF! But does it feel like Friday? When we are stuck at home, the days blend into each other. Work time blurs into off time, lunch time blends into dinner time, into one long snack. Bedtimes and wake up times are sliding around, and we are all stuck in this weird twilight of time.
When we don’t leave the house for work, our daily classes, errands, routines, or habits, we lose the markers of time we have that give us structure and a sense of normalcy.
It’s important to create rituals throughout our day and our week that ground us in time. That let us know when it’s ‘on’ and ‘off’ time. Perhaps its a cup of coffee when you sit down to your computer. A glass of water mid morning. A walk after your ‘work day’ is over- regardless of whether you have an official job or not.
Do you have a weekend ritual? Friday movie night, Saturday take out? A trip to go hiking? How are you setting up bookmarks in time to give yourself a sense of normalcy?
Oftentimes we have to create these on purpose. Declare that this is the reason why I am doing this, and this is what it means to me. Give yourself the boundaries you need. And be creative! Work others into your routine! A daily phone call, letter written, time spent praying or lifting up someone else, these can be beautiful and rewarding ways to create rituals.
What rituals do you have? How have they brought you solace in this time?
