Don’t Jump to the Fight.

We life in America. Home of the free. Free speech, free opinions, free hotdogs at the used car lot. We also live in the land of the disagree. Things are polarized to a degree now, that we practically dismiss the humanity of the person who isn’t sporting your politcal mascot. Just read the commments section of any politician’s words to see how brutal the dialogue can be. The same can be said for religion, for opinions on whether discrimination still exists, whether the environment is in trouble, for whether the hotdogs at the used car lot should be eaten with ketchup or mustard. (Spoiler Alert- DON’T EAT THEM AT ALL.)
We are so socialized to automatically go to bat for our team, that people jump into the fray without engaging with the person they are arguing with. Facts are used as swords, and are swung around careless to the bloodshed that happens. What is the way out?
When at war, a soldier doesn’t have the luxury of seeing the enemy combattant as a human. They are simply the enemy. But friends, we are not at war. Today is a day to remember those brave soldiers who died for our right to disagree with each other. Don’t we owe them the gift of seeing the humanity of those with whom we disagree?
For example, take the mask debate. People have opinions on whether things should remain closed or open back up. Whether others should be required to wear masks in public. We all have thoughts on this. Including me. But ripping people to shreds on Facebook doesn’t change anyone’s mind. No one is ever convinced to change their position by someone else’s gotchas.
Instead, what if we become people who ask instead of tell? Who try and really understand the other person’s point of view without attaching value to that position. When people feel well and truly listened to, they are willing to listen to your opinion as well. And perhaps hearing the reasons behind someone’s belief can shed light on why they feel that way. Even if you disagree with them still, you can still see their why.
